Book Signing: "In The Light of Men" by Sam Desmond
The CM Performing Arts Center is thrilled to announce an exciting free book signing event on Thursday, January 30, at 7:00 PM with acclaimed award-winning journalist Sam Desmond. Desmond, a longtime contributor to the Suffolk County News, has been writing for the publication since 2019, covering the vibrant communities of Oakdale, Sayville, West Sayville, Bayport, Blue Point, Oakdale, and Bohemia.
“In the Light of Men” is her first fiction novella, which took over 11 years to finalize and draws from the vast inspiration in her articles, friendships, and loves developed and cultivated from the dynamic and dedicated people she has been honored to cover as a writer.
About the Book:
Belén Aguilar has spent her life dreaming of British lineage and family prestige.
In marrying Patrick Stratton-Delaney, she moves to his idyllic town of Carel, where she becomes a reporter for the local paper.
Carel, located on the south shore of Long Island and a 90 minute train ride to Manhattan, becomes the almost-English-countryside home of her dreams.
Euphoric over painting and highlighting the tight-knit community's stories, Belén internally struggles with her self-deprecation and machinations of being sub-par for Carel.
In her stories and dalliances, she seeks to be in the light of men to outshine her self-doubt.

Rock of Ages
It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, lace and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues, a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock ’n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more hold the answer.
Dates: Sat 18, Sun 19, Wed 22, Fri 24, Sat 25, Sun 26, Fri 31
